Why a Sump Pump Might be a Good Idea

When most people think of flooding, they tend to imagine large, catastrophic deluges where entire houses become submerged. While that is certainly a big problem in certain parts of the country, it isn’t nearly as widespread as more moderate flooding. Even a relatively small amount of water damage can cost thousands of dollars to repair, if it occurs in the wrong place. Fortunately, there’s a way to combat these more moderate flooding risks. Let’s take a look at sump pumps, and the benefits they offer.

Sump Pumps

A sump pump is a system designed to protect a single area against becoming damaged due to flooding. A pit is dug at the lowest point of the area. This pit is called the sump. All water that flows into an area that will flow downhill into the sump. The sump pump is then either installed inside or above the sump. A pipe is connected to the pump, and runs out of the house. When the water level in the sump reaches a certain level, the sump pump activates and pumps all the water out of the house.

Advantages of Sump Pumps

The areas that tend to suffer the most flooding damage are basements and crawl spaces. The problem with these areas, especially the basement, is that they tend to contain appliances and such that would be very expensive to repair or replace. If your basement floods, it could mean that you have to replace all of your climate control systems. The amount of money you have to spend in repair costs could skyrocket in such cases, compared to just replacing flooring or drywall. A sump pump ensures that those areas remain properly protected from flooding.
