5 Ways That Drain Clogs Damage Your Plumbing

Drain clogs – two words you don’t even want to think about. It’s not just annoying to deal with, but it’s also gross to think about what might be clogging the drains in your home. Maybe you’ve been ignoring the signs of drain clogs because you just don’t want to deal with them.

But if you have any clogs in your household plumbing, you need plumbing service in Bucks County, PA sooner rather than later. Your pipes are designed to withstand the test of time, but drain clogs can lead to corrosion and damage that shorten the life of your plumbing.

If you notice that water drains too slowly from your sinks or your toilet overflows, you might have a clogged drain. Another good indicator of a clogged drain is that your tub fills with water as you take a shower. You might think that a clogged drain is a mere annoyance. This is not always the case, however, as a clogged drain can pose serious consequences.

Leaks

A clogged drain allows water to back up in your plumbing system because it drains slowly around the blockage. This can lead to leaks around the joints in your plumbing where caulking and seals weaken over time. If you have a leak somewhere in your home, a clogged drain may be to blame. You may not notice clogs or leaks right away if they are minor, but the damage can add up quickly. Watch for signs of mold and mildew or visible water damage on walls and ceilings.

Smells

When you wash your hands at a sink anywhere in your home, the only thing you want to smell is the soap you use to wash your hands with. If you notice an odor coming from any of your plumbing, that’s a sign that you have a pretty bad clog. A plumbing clog can start small. But over time more and more debris builds up. Mold and mildew can grow along with other bacteria. Eventually, this growth creates an odor strong enough that it wafts out of the drain and into your home.

Contamination

You may think that contamination only impacts water coming into your home. But a clogged drain can increase the likelihood of contamination in your sinks. Water goes down your drain when the faucet runs, but then the same water backs up into your sink or tub because of the clog. This allows bacteria to travel up and into your home. It can be on the surface of your sink or tub, but some bacteria can also become airborne and impact your health.

Bugs

Unfortunately, bugs are attracted to clogs for several seasons. For some pests, water and clogs indicate a great space to lay eggs. Other pests may smell food that gets trapped in clogs and they see a source of nutrition. Either way, you don’t want to attract bugs with a drain clog. You can quickly have an infestation that is difficult to get rid of.

Overall Health Concerns

If the individual reasons above aren’t enough to cause alarm, consider your health. Each of the above problems can impact your health in a negative way. And if you have a clogged drain, you don’t just have one of these problems. You probably have them all. That means your health is being attacked in several ways, increasing the chances of you or someone in your family getting sick.
