Oversized Furnace
Furnaces are designed to operate in cycles, putting out a certain amount of heat over a certain period of time in order to properly warm a space. Cutting a cycle short, or making it run too long, harms the system in a number of ways. The problem with a furnace that’s too large is that it puts out too much heat for the space, which causes the thermostat to shut the system down early. This places extreme stress on the furnace, which will eventually cause the system to break down.
Undersized Furnace
A furnace that is too small for the house in which it is installed will put out too little heat to keep the home warm. So, the furnace will stay on for far longer than it is designed to do in an attempt to heat the home properly. This puts just as much stress on the system as if it were oversized, with the same result. The system will quickly wear down and break down completely.
The real danger of putting an improperly sized system in your home is quite simple: you’ll have to replace it much sooner than if you installed a properly sized system.
