3 Common Problems That Can Develop with Your AC’s Compressor

Your air conditioning system is comprised of a number of components, but there are three key components that are responsible for much of the work: the condenser, the evaporator and the compressor. Of these three components, the compressor would be considered the most mechanical, as it is responsible for pressurizing the refrigerant in your system. Compressors do a great deal of work, and operating day in and out under great pressure can lead to repair issues, particularly if your air conditioning system hasn’t been properly maintained. Common Compressors Problems

  • Issues with the motor – the compressor motor can malfunction for a few reasons, some of the more common ones being lack of lubrication, overheating and taking in liquid refrigerant (the refrigerant should always be in a gaseous state when entering the compressor). Issues with the motor will cause operational problems, and these problems will affect your entire AC system.
  • Electrical problems – there are two key areas where electrical problems can develop in your compressor. The first is with the wiring – it is not unusual for wiring to fray and/or corrode, which will affect electrical flow and the compressor’s operation. The second common electrical problem that can develop with your compressor is an issue with a capacitor. Your compressor has two capacitors, and problems with either one (or both) will affect how the compressor operates.
  • Problems with correct pressurization – your compressor pulls in and releases refrigerant in a pump-like action; for this action to work properly, the right level of pressurization has to exist inside the compressor.
